Green hydrogen production could allow Namibia to benefit from excess renewable energy and become more energy independent - currently, the country imports 40% of its energy needs from South Africa. It could also provide Namibia with a chance to reach its decarbonization goals.
This landmark investment will drive the development of Namibia''s green hydrogen sector, fuelling long-term social and economic growth while accelerating the global energy transition.
Written by: Max Paarlberg & Maghnia Bouanati Edited by: Ryan O''Connor Abstract: In 2022, the European Union (EU) and Namibia established a strategic partnership focusing on green hydrogen. This partnership is driven by the EU''s need to diversify energy sources post-Ukraine invasion, its ambitious climate goals under the European Green Deal

Thanks to its abundant renewable energy potential, Namibia is becoming a front-runner in the green hydrogen space. The EU is proud to be a partner in this transformative journey towards green industrialisation. Together we can further decarbonise our economies, create jobs and ensure a more prosperous and greener future for our societies.
The EU and Namibia have launched the roadmap of their renewable hydrogen partnership. To ensure it effectively helps the EU’s sustainability goals and boosts Namibia’s economic growth, planning should be clearer and more realistic Belgium, Brussels, 2023-10-24.
It also enables EU to diversify its partnerships in view of access to sustainably sourced raw materials. While demonstrating global leadership on hydrogen development, Namibia is the EU’s trusted partner on green transition. This partnership of equals creates a solid platform for increased sustainability both in Namibia and in the EU.
In November 2022, Namibia and the EU signed a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a strategic partnership on Sustainable Raw Materials Value Chains and Renewable Hydrogen.
Trade should also work towards achieving universal energy access and economic progress. This will require that renewable hydrogen can also be used in Namibia’s energy mix to support electricity supply and for industrial processes, like green steel production.
