Brightening lives by building the capacity to deliver uninterrupted, safe and affordable power to Karachiites. Principle Business KE is the only vertically-integrated power utility in Pakistan, which means the organisation manages all three key areas – Generation, Transmission and Distribution – of producing and delivering energy to consumers.
Hence, Pakistan is still facing electricity concerns, power outages and load shedding. Government is trying to increase the electricity generation, upgrade the electricity distribution infrastructure, reduce transmission losses, eradicate power outages and make electricity cheaper in the future.
Pakistan’s power sector is mired in a complex web of challenges, characterized by chronic underinvestment, inefficient power generation, and a dysfunctional distribution network. The sector’s history is marked by ill-conceived policies, corruption, and a lack of long-term planning.
All are fully owned by the government. K-Electric Limited (formally known as Karachi Electric Supply Company), which is responsible for power generation and distribution in the Karachi area, is listed on the stock exchanges and is privately owned. Privately owned independent power producers generated 53% of the country's power in FY2016.
There are around 42 independent power producers (IPPs) that contribute significantly in electricity generation in Pakistan. As of 2016 on average, more than 80% of Pakistan's population had access to electricity. [ 1]
In what is considered a “decisive move aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s energy sector”, KE deemed the deal to “successfully resolve chronic issues plaguing” Al-Jomaih Group and NIG.
Power outages are common in all cities and villages of Pakistan. Situation is worse in rural and remote areas. At some places there is no electricity for up to 5 hours a day. Some rural or remote areas are still not electrified due to lack of transmission lines.
