Solar potential in the Czech Republic Solar panels in Prague. The Czech Republic had almost two gigawatts (GW) of photovoltaic capacity at the end of 2010, but installed less than 10 megawatts (MW) in 2011 due to the feed-in tariff being reduced by 25%, after installing almost 1,500 MW the year before. Installations increased to 109 MW in 2012.
According to the Czech government, the programme aims to achieve energy savings in final consumption, with measurement including the development of solar PV systems. In contrast, there were only 2,730 company and land-based solar PV plants added last year, with a total output of about 140MWp.
A Czech energy company has been forced to unplug hundreds of solar panels after they generated more power than the grid could handle. Electricity use was low in the Czech Republic Easter Monday.

The Czech Republic saw many new solar installations in the last year. An impressive 82,799 new solar sources were operational, marking an increase of 49,039 installations from the previous year. The installed capacity also saw a significant rise of 970 megawatts (MW).
According to data from the Czech Solar Energy Association (Solární Asociace), the solar photovoltaic stations installed in the Czech Republic in 2023 have a total capacity of over 970 MW, which is 236% more than the 288.8 MW installed in 2022. The leader in this field has been domestic solar power stations, accounting for 823.3 MW of capacity.

Czechia built around 1 GW of new PV plants in 2023, according to data from the Czech Solar Association (Solární Asociace). In total, 82,799 solar power plants were connected to the grid, with a combined total output of 970 MW. The nation achieved a record-breaking year with 145% growth, connecting 49,000 more power plants than it did in 2022.
The figures mark a period of rapid growth in Czechia’s solar market. The growth has been largely driven by residential PV, with most of the new installations (80,069) being domestic PV plants, supported by the country investing an additional CZK 55 billion ($2.5 billion) in its New Green Savings program back in March 2023.
