A tailings dam is an earth-filled embankment dam used to dispose of uneconomic byproducts of mining operations after separating the valuable fraction of the ore. Since most abandoned mines have tailings dams, installation and operation of PV systems might be possible if the surface of the tailings embankment could be used.
