The bottom-up BESS model accounts for major components, including the LIB pack, inverter, and the balance of system (BOS) needed for the installation.
While it’s difficult to provide an exact price, industry estimates suggest a range of $300 to $600 per kWh. Battery storage costs have evolved rapidly over the past several years, necessitating an update to storage cost projections used in long-term planning models and other activities. This work documents the development of these projections, which are based on recent publications of storage costs.
The projections are developed from an analysis of over 25 publications that consider utility-scale storage costs. The suite of publications demonstrates varied cost reduction for battery storage over time. Figure ES-1 shows the low, mid, and high cost projections developed in this work (on a normalized basis) relative to the published values.
